Pigeons

There is an oak tree by the pond in my backyard, and every April, a pair of pigeons would make a nest in it. Mama Pigeon would lay down the first several twigs, and Daddy Pigeon would help build the rest. Soon Mama Pigeon would lay a pair of eggs, and then both birds would take turns caring for the eggs. Several weeks later, a pair of Baby Pigeons would appear, and Mama and Daddy Pigeons would frantically feed the babies.

The summer heat would bear down on them, and then the hurricane season would show them no mercy. Throughout, they would sing together in the morning, and hurdle together when it rains. While pretending not to notice them, I truly enjoy their being there.

One summer day, I will look up and they would be gone. Baby Pigeons would be old enough to fly away, and they would leave the old nest and my heart empty. I love my pigeons and will miss them.

Young and I have three pigeons of our own named Vân, Vinh and Minh. Before this summer is over, Vân will stretch her wings and fly away to college. The whole world will open their arms to embrace her, and she would cherish her freedom and independence. Our Baby Pigeon will fly high and far. Both Young and I would be so proud to be the wind beneath her wings.

I went to college twenty-five years ago. No money, no car, and barely speaking English. My brothers and sisters, my Mom and Dad did not even know where it was, but Texas A&M University was my open sky. I wasn't looking, but it was there that I found Young, the Love of My Life. My Mama Pigeon.

This time Vân will be well prepared. She will have her iPod with her. Her laptop, cell phone and her car. Young will give her money to buy more designer clothes. Vân will look as good as she is smart. She will be a good student, and best of all she will be someone's good friend.

Young, the boys and I will no doubt take her to her dorm, and we will help her get settled in. In no time, she will make new friends, and go off to do college girls things. Mama, the boys and I will leave quietly; and in the car Young will cry. I will hold her hands, and kiss them. I will thank her for letting me help build the nest, for teaching Vân to sing and to fly, and for giving Vân to us all to love.

I love you Young, and I love our pigeons.
