I saw a mother cow feeding her young calf this morning on my drive to Dallas. The sky was deep blue, the grass was emerald green, and the baby was wagging its tail in contentment. This tender moment reminded me of what transpired recently in our family.

I talked to Mom on Sunday's night, after Huy-Hoàng has gone to rest. I remembered distinctly the shuddering, trembling of her voice, when I told her Huy-Hoàng was involved in an accident. It must have taken her breath away, as I heard her voice crackled on the other side of the phone line. She was in pain and trying to choke back her tears. For the first time, I felt her intense love for Huy-Hoàng. I could almost see the tears rolling down her face.

When she came to visit Huy-Hoàng in the morning, her hair was unkempt and the bags under her eyes were obvious. Dad was there by her side, but somehow I felt her loneliness. Perhaps, only a mother can understand her feelings.

Then in the evening, when you all came to visit. I was so deeply touched. I saw Mom's worry in Hùng's eyes, and felt Mom's compassion in Lêvi's face. The advices from Hưng reminded me of her wisdom. Huyền's light hearted comments mirrored her gentleness.

Tí was holding Emily, but I saw Mom's tender embrace. Hà called and Dad called, and I heard her voice reaching out. I guess there is a bit of Mom in all of us. And somehow, I felt comforted.

Tonight, I am away from home, but I feel loved. It was the love from Dung, as I saw her running around helping Huy-Hoàng and taking care of his matters. I felt the love from Vân, Vinh and Minh, as they tip-toed around the house gingerly, so Chú Huy-Hoàng can rest. The business, the lenders, and the employees can wait. My family, our family is first for all of us. Huy-Hoàng is indeed a lucky man, but we are all so fortunate.

 

One day, when the sky is gray, the grass is yellow, and the phone call is heavy. Let's us pray for our family unity. Tonight, I am grateful to be a part of this family.
